I’m Dr. Muhammad Usman, and I’ve always been passionate about research. After completing my Master’s in Biotechnology from Quaid-i-Azam University with distinction, I wanted to pursue a PhD in the United States. However, funding was a major concern.
I learned through Global Consultants that many US universities offer fully funded PhD programs with teaching or research assistantships. These positions not only cover tuition fees but also provide a monthly stipend for living expenses. This made a US PhD financially viable.
I applied to several top research universities, including MIT, Stanford, and UC Berkeley. Global Consultants helped me craft strong research proposals, secure recommendation letters from my professors, and prepare for interviews with potential advisors. They also helped me identify professors whose research aligned with my interests.
I was accepted to UC Berkeley’s PhD program in Molecular Biology with a full research assistantship. This means my tuition is fully covered, and I receive a stipend of $35,000 per year. The consultants then helped me with the F-1 student visa application, which requires showing proof of funding, acceptance letter, and strong ties to my home country.
I arrived in California in August 2022. UC Berkeley is a world-class research institution with excellent facilities and resources. I’m working on cutting-edge research in gene therapy under the supervision of a leading expert in the field. The research environment is inspiring, and I’m surrounded by brilliant researchers from around the world.
The PhD program is challenging but rewarding. I’ve already published a paper in a prestigious journal and presented my research at international conferences. The stipend is sufficient for living comfortably in the Bay Area, and I’m gaining valuable teaching experience as well.
After completing my PhD, I’ll be eligible for Optional Practical Training (OPT), which allows me to work in the US for up to 3 years in my field. This could lead to an H-1B visa or potentially a green card through employment or EB-1 (Extraordinary Ability) visa. Global Consultants helped me understand all these pathways.
Studying in the USA has been a dream come true. The research opportunities here are unparalleled, and I’m confident that this PhD will open doors to a successful research career anywhere in the world.
